Huawei and BayWa r.e. partner up on procurement contract

Executives from both BayWa Renewable Energy and Huawei met earlier in the week in Shenzhen, China, to finalize a deal that will see Huawei supply its string inverters to an initial 400 MW of BayWa’s solar projects. It is a significant deal for the Chinese company, as it looks imprint itself further on the European market, and to prove that string inverters belong at utility-scale projects.

The deal was signed between BayWa and Huawei’s Smart PV Business, and is a Global Procurement Framework Contract. The initial target of the agreement is for the delivery of 400 MW of Huawei’s inverters, but also for the development of smart PV solutions, including testing Huawei’s FusionSolar Smart PV Solution with string inverters.

“Huawei’s unique Smart I-V Curve Diagnosis technology promises to improve PV plant performance in a very efficient way,” commented BayWa r.e. Solar Projects head of engineering Edgar Gimbel.

BayWa is a developer of utility-scale solar and wind plants, with over 2 GW currently in operation, which makes this deal particularly interesting, as it shows that string inverters are growing in preference for utility-scale developers, and also for European developers.

Huawei’s meteoric rise up the inverter landscape has seen the company now command the largest market share, in terms of shipments, after entering the market just a few years ago. Now the company is hoping to consolidate its position by expanding into more international markets, and by spreading it smart PV solutions, which this partnership with BayWa should help to facilitate.
